Description
Two Pronghorn, Antilocapra americana, on Burnett-Dixon Creek-6666 Ranch on the High Plains of the Texas Panhandle. The Pronghorn is indigenous to interior western and central North America. Though not an antelope, it is often known in North America as the prong buck, pronghorn antelope, cabri or just antelope. Pronghorns will flare out the white hairs on their rump when alarmed.
This serves as a warning to the other members of the herd.Pronghorns will flare out the white hairs on their rump when alarmed.
This serves as a warning to the other members of the herd. It is the fastest land mammal in the world, able to sprint 60 mph and sustain a speed of 30 mph for miles. The African Cheetah is often credited with being the fastest, but it is only a sprinter who flags out after a few hundred yards. No other land mammal can keep up with the Pronghorn over a long distance. When encountering a fence, a Pronghorn usually crawls under rather than jumping over.
